I was thinking about #Obsidian, a growing knowledge base and linking. In the beginning, as you make notes on a topic, you don't make links because you don't know the facts are related yet. It would be cool, and maybe a good use of AI, if there were a tool that could go back and link all your notes and build the knowledge graph. Think of one of those boards in detective shows where they just start pinning facts to the board. Victim, crime scene, suspect 1 then some clue is revealed and everything links up and you have a case.

I spent some free time over the last week or so rebuilding my site. I had moved to Pico CSS about a month ago because I wanted something more modern than I was using. I needed something simple enough that I could wrap my head around how it works and easily drop it in without too much fuss. I find CSS to be a bit of a mystery. If I hack on it long enough I can get things to a good spot but it doesn't come naturally and I'm no artist.
This week was all about the frontend. I've been using Obsidian as the editor of choice because it works with Markdown files natively. My site is made up of static HTML generated from markdown by Eleventy (11ty). I was using a Vault (Obsidian's word for where your files are stored) for my Personal notes and another Vault that housed all the markdown and asset files for my website. That has worked well but there is a lot of overlap. My brain had to keep track of what was in my personal notes and what was on the website. So, I decided I'd combine the two.
One huge advantage to using Obsidian as your frontend is the ability to use the Templater plugin. This lets me create a temple for a blog post and another for a garden page. It will even auto name and move the file to the correct folder.
I keep a Digital Garden on my site so my idea is that I will continue to flesh that out and merge some of the notes that were hidden in my personal notes over into the Digital Garden. One nice thing is that in my Obsidian vault, everything is indexed so if I do move a note from one folder to the other, it is easily found in my local repository.
What about private notes? The default folder in my Obsidian vault is NOT one of the public folders. This means I can edit a post or keep a private note and it won't get published until I move it to the right folder. Also, I have 11ty ignore certain folders at build time so nothing from there gets published. Additionally, it's not like I keep info that is that private in my Vault.
On the 11ty side, I took the opportunity to completely rewrite my .eleventy.js file. This is the core of 11ty that tells it what to include, which plugins and filters to use and what to simply pass through. It was a mess after a bunch of experimentation with different things. I also implemented photogabble's awesome plugin that adds wikilink and wikilink embed support with tracking of backlinks.. This makes using Obsidian as the front end even easier because making a link to another note is as simple as typing [[noteName]] and 11ty will render it correctly as a web link when the site is published. They wrote more about the plugin here: Adding Wiki Links to 11ty.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I've either over-complicated things for myself or made it easier to do my "digital gardening". Either way, it was fun to figure out.

It's been a while since I posted about my favorite Fediverse client, Phanpy https://phanpy.social/. It's a web app that works well on every device from desktop to mobile. It handles long threads like a dream and skillfully manages reposts in a unique horizontal scrolling UI. I honestly can't imagine being part of the Fediverse without it.

There are two things I want to ensure in my Obsidian Vault: 1) Every note is actually created in the vault. And 2) Every note has a link to another note or Map of Content (MOC) within the vault.
What do I mean, actually created? In Obsidian you can, in the text of a note, simply add [[My Grand Idea]] which looks like a link to the note called "My Grand Idea" but I might not have a real note called "My Grand Idea". This Base, which I keep on a note called "In Box" gathers up any non-created notes and shows them to me so I can be sure I create them for real.
The line that says !file.path.contains("Support") is meant to prevent anything in my Support folder or it's subfolders from showing up in the Base. This is where I keep my Templates. You can omit that line or change Support to something that makes sense for your Vault.
The second one is self explanatory: I want all notes to link to each other. This Base shows me any notes that don't contain links to other notes in the vault.
Like the above, I don't want false-positives showing up for notes in the Files folder (where I keep attachments), the Support folder or the Daily folder. These filters could be modified or removed.
I've been using Linux and in particular Zorin OS for a month or so. I try and note anything I've had to figure out or want to remember the next time I have to do an install. I've posted my notes to my Digital Garden: Linux Notes https://techlifeweb.com/garden/Linux/

Starting Jan 1, 2026, you’ll be able to submit a request through DROP, asking data brokers to delete your data.
Starting Aug 1, 2026, data brokers are required to start regularly processing consumer deletion requests, reducing how many times your data can be bought, sold, and pop-up on sketchy websites. 😎

Obsidian is the notes app I use the most. Over the past few years, my collection of notes has changed a lot. I try out different ways of organizing my notes, then I watch videos or read about how other people use the app, and I adjust my setup accordingly. There’s no single correct way to use it. The way I use Obsidian might be very different from how you do. Heck, my online friend Lou Plummer (@amerpie on Mastodon) maintains a whole list of Example Obsidian Vaults from Around the Internet for you to see the different ways this wonderful app can be used.
My current way of organizing and working in Obsidian is finally stable and working well for me. I’ve decided it's the right time to share my setup and write about how I use it. Like everything else here, I do this so I can remember what I did and why, and also to have a place to send people who ask me about it.
Here's some information about the vault and how I use it. I've also added a section about my personal rules for using it. Your rules don't have to be the same as mine, but I strongly encourage you to take a moment to think about what you're doing with your notes and, even more importantly, why you're making these notes.
When I was setting up my vault, I believed that being able to find things easily was the most important idea. So, I thought about how to make notes that are quick and simple to create, while also including enough details so I can find them again without any trouble.
I avoid folders for content. Every note is stored in the Notes folder with the exception of Daily Notes which are held in the Notes/Daily subfolder.
Notes that are not content are stored under the Support folder. There are subfolders for the special cases of Navigation notes (some call these MOCs or Maps of Content) and Templates.
I have all the Navigation notes bookmarked so they appear in the list of Bookmarks. That panel I have open on the upper left and is where I start all my navigation unless I just search.
📥In Box: This is a list of any file this has been linked to but not yet created
🗂️Resources: Things I am interested in
🌐Areas: Areas of Responsibility are the roles you take on in life and the hats you wear (Spouse, Mother/Father, Team Leader, Soccer Coach)
💼Efforts: Things I'm actively working on
😎 Favorites: Any notes tagged "favorites" will show up here
📈Stats: Uses Dataview to show the current number of files in my Obsidian Vault and has a list of the 10 most recent notes.
Having Bookmarks always handy in the sidebar like this is very helpful for temporarily keeping notes handy. For example, if I'm on a trip I'll bookmark my "Trip to London" (or wherever) note and it is then a click or tap away when I pull up Obsidian while on the road.
I store this file at the root level of my folder structure for quick and easy access. Whenever I add or modify a plugin, I update the notes in this document accordingly. Some changes are straightforward, while others are more complex, so maintaining a record ensures clear documentation for future reference.
Default Template: Gets applied to all notes except Daily Notes
Daily Notes: For Daily Notes
Code - Subcategory List
This is code is magical Dataview code that pulls in a Base with a similar name. It is for displaying linked notes by Subcategory.
Code - Category List
More magical Dataview code the pulls in a Base.
The "magic" of these code snippets is that the snippet pulls in code when the note is displayed rather than actually living on the note itself. This allows me to change the design of the template ONCE and it is applied to ALL notes where this code is displayed. For example, I could change the design of a Base or add text to the template and now instantly all notes with that code have the changes rather than having to reedit all the notes.
Commander is a plugin for Obsidian which allows you to add commands to different parts of the user interface.
Dataview
Create and display queries to your content. Obsidian now has the core plugin called Bases which does something similar however, I've found there are still use cases for Dataview
Harper
Harper is a grammar checking plugin that doesn't violate your privacy.
Lazy Plugin Loader
Load plugins with a delay on Obsidian startup, so that you can get your app startup down into the sub-second loading time.
Linter
This Obsidian plugin formats and styles your notes with a focus on configurability and extensibility.
Minimal Theme Settings
This plugin accompanies Minimal Theme, allowing you to customize the theme from the Obsidian Settings panel. This plugin is not required to use Minimal Theme, but highly recommended.
Omnisearch
Omnisearch is a search engine that "just works". It always instantly shows you the most relevant results, thanks to its smart weighting algorithm.
Paste image PNG to JPEG
The plugin automatically handles the following when the image (png jpg jpeg) is pasted into the notes
1,Convert the image to jpeg format and compress it
2,store the image in the current notes directory in the images folder
3,Change the name of the image to the name of the current note plus a number
Plugin Update Tracker
Know when installed plugins have updates and evaluate the risk of upgrading
Style Settings
This plugin allows snippet, theme, and plugin CSS files to define a set of configuration options. It then allows users to see all the tweakable settings in one settings pane. Style Settings allows both toggling classes on and off the body element, as well as setting numeric, string, and color CSS variables.
Templater
A templating language that lets you insert variables and functions results into your notes. It will also let you execute JavaScript code manipulating those variables and functions.
The reason for this is sometimes, like this case of Coffee Shops, there are many similar items in the subcategory and I might want to report on them in a different way using Bases or Dataview.
Tags:
Always pluralize tags.
Always lower case, single word tags.
If multi word tags are absolutely necessary, use camelCase
Tags = the type of note (examples: links, meetingNotes, clippings)
Keep the number of tags to a minimum
Start with as few as possible and build from there if you come up with a really good use case for a new one
Use internal links profusely.
Use YYYY-MM-DD dates wherever dates are needed. ISO 8601 exists for a reason.
Usage Examples (you'll find these in this template vault as well):
You read a good book called Daemon
Name of the note: Daemon
category: [[Books]]
subcategory: Fiction
You want to save a link to a web page about Dataview in Obsidian
tags: links
category: [[Obsidian]]
subcategory: Dataview
Thanks for reading. Hope you found something you can use!

If that happens, a whole lot of small businesses will probably need to find new networking gear. I have never trusted TP-Link devices and have repeatedly warned readers away from them. They have a history of flooding the market with massively underpriced hardware, and this is a market where generally speaking the cheapest means the most hackable. Here's one reply I sent to a reader in 2023 who inquired about finding what appeared to be an undocumented cloud login page.

You do not want your router to do anything except when you tell it do so, and to my mind all this cloud business being attached to network storage and local network things is troubling."
"If you are at all confident around computers, I'd recommend getting something like a high-end ASUS router and then installing an open source firmware on it, like Tomato or something. Because the default software that is on most routers is complete garbage, and often turns on a lot of stuff you really don't want turned on, or has other stupid default settings. If updating your new $160 router w/ third party firmware that could brick it if you screw it up is too much, then just stick with a Netgear router and make sure you check for firmware updates periodically."

#11ty follow-up: I pull posts (PESOS) from Mastodon to my own site via 11ty/import plugin. I then have some automation that crossposts to Bluesky via webmention and brid.gy. Earlier I noticed that hashtags weren't being sent as links to Bluesky. Thanks to @snarfed I learned that is because I needed to have the class "p-category" on my hashtags. Well that's fine but I'm pulling these in automagically and they aren't formatted that way. Changing the code by hand after import is a non-starter. Fortunately, I was able to figure out how to create an 11ty filter that will watch and change the code at build time. Here's the filter that changes "class='mention hashtag" to "class='mention p-category"

It's a great way to discover new writers and new voices even if they haven't published recently. And that's one of the key aspects of writing for the #indieweb that matters most. We strive for quality, not urgency.
I made a thing called Wellness Ping because someone I care about went silent and it took too long for anyone to notice.
You get regular check-ins via email. If you don't respond, your emergency contacts get notified.
Built it for anyone who might go missing and needs someone to notice: activists, journalists, researchers, solo folks.
I paid for premium hosting (high-reliability VPS in Sweden) and a quality email provider because uptime actually matters for something like this. Also paying extra for minimal data retention (7 days email activity, working toward zero content storage).
Free forever (as long as I'm alive) and open source.
Today I learned about xcancel.com https://xcancel.com/about. Also, I found this Chrome extension that converts x.com to xcancel.com so if you click a link it'll take you to the place you want https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/xcancelcom-redirector/pgbegepjkmpcolalkpbakcbjlkodakie?pli=1

I haven't really had a problem with finding and installing distros. I think where my #Linux knowledge falls down is all around disks. From Linux, I want to be able to share a drive or partition to Windows or Linux machines. From Linux, I want to be able to map a drive to a Windows share. Similarly, I need to understand how to use external USB drives like flash drives or even old-school Blu-ray or DVD drives.

The WKRP: Johnny Fever Mix is a three-hour playlist of great 70s rock hits compiled from every DJ break that Dr. Johnny Fever made on "WKRP in Cincinnati," with introductions and comments by the Doctor himself, news from Les Nessman, and a commercial read by Venus Flytrap.
After listening to the Johnny Fever mix for a while, I remembered that there are Internet archives of hours or radio DJ sets, recorded off the air on tape, digitized, and uploaded to the Internet. I found this hour of Dan Ingram on WABC New York from September 1976.
I was a teenager then, living in that area, and might have listened to that hour live!
But listening to it for a little while this morning reminded me that I didn't much like WABC; I was a 99X guy and, in the 80s, WBAB. Listening also reminded me that 99% of the pop music in the 1970s was bad. However, Sturgeon's Law probably applies here.
According to Wikipedia: "One of Ingram's unique skills was his ability to 'talk up' to the lyrics of a record, meaning speaking over the musical introduction and finishing exactly at the point when the lyrics started."

I wanted a quick way to copy movie details and a link to the page from IMDB. This way I can easily paste them to a Mastodon post or simply into a list of movies watched. Here's the result of the copied text:

const text = `🎬 ${description} ${link}`;
navigator.clipboard.writeText(text).then(() => {

As the fan of a West Coast #MLB National League team I'm always scrolling down the list of all the teams to see the standings. The default MLB URL lists AL first then east to west. It's a lot of scrolling all season long. I discovered quite by accident that MLB has unique URLs by team that put the division of your team at the top. For example, https://www.mlb.com/padres/standings/ puts the NL West at the top because that's where the Padres are. Edit and save yourself a shortcut or favorite with your teams name in place of "padres" and save yourself a season of scrolling.

Spent way too much time trying to get an image link to work properly inside a table in \#Obsidian. A side effect of #Obsidian web clipper iis that the images can be huge when viewing your note and you have to do a lot of scrolling to get past them. So, I set out to find a solution. https://techlifeweb.com/blog/2025/05/post-2025-05-30T175849/
I've been using the Obsidian Web Clipper a lot lately. Sometimes for bits and pieces of pages and sometimes full articles to read later. A nice feature is that the clipper grabs links to the images rather than taking up your storage with them. The side effect to that is that the images can be huge when viewing your note and you have to do a lot of scrolling to get past them. So, I set out to find a solution.
I found some nifty CSS code created by Kepano that got me about 99% of the way there. What it does it let you click and hold on an image and view it full screen. That itself is pretty cool. I added a line to the code to make it size the images down to something more manageable. Since you can click+hold and still see the whole image it gives you a very nice working solution.
Examples
This screenshot is a page in my vault with an image from the International Space Station. The whole image isn't visible without scrolling down.
Here is the same page after I've applied the CSS. Other elements are clearly visible because the images aren't massive.
And here is the image when I'm click+holding on it. Look ma, no scrolling and you can see the whole thing!
The code
You'll be adding custom CSS to Obsidian. If you've never done that, this guide will show you what you need to do. CSS snippets - Obsidian Help
Note, where it says "Create a css file", that is a simple text file with a name like "imagesize.css" or something equally clever. You'll see the name in your obsidian settings so name it something that makes sense to you. And don't put spaces in the name.
Paste the code below into your cleverly named css file. Save. Refresh in Obsidian. Done.
Caveats: There could be conflicts with your theme. This seems to work fine in Minimal and Border. In the default theme, it appears to only resize the images and not allow for the click+hold.
Improvements and other ideas welcome.

If you're in KDE and can't tell where the edges of your @obsidian windows are (for example if you use Solarized theme in Obsidian and the terminal window behind it), turn on "Native frame" for the "Window frame style" option under Advanced in the Appearance settings.
With Obsidian, using multi-file search and replace in a text editor like Bbedit or Notepad++ is a huge time saver for editing properties or just notes in general. Much better than trying to use the handicapped plugin that tries to do the same thing. \#Obsidian\#ObsidianMD\#PKM

Yesterday I mentioned the Mastodon Redirector plugin and today, thanks to @BeAware@mementomori.social, I discovered an even better plugin called Graze that is written by @jaredzimmerman@jaredzimmerman.com. Mastodon Redirector - 'Redirect Mastodon URLs from other instances to your own instance.' https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/mastodon-redirector/limifnkopacddgpihodacjeckfkpbfoe Looks to be a good solution to my earlier post about the rough edges of working with Mastodon posts from other instances. With the extension installed, simply click on the extension icon and you’ll be taken to the same account or status update you were viewing, but served on the Mastodon instance your account is on. Then you can easily interact with the post to reply, favorite, etc. Works in Chrome (or Chrome-like browsers e.g., Vivaldi) i #Mastodon #Fediverse
If I find an interesting post on another instance, say via RSS or someone sends me a link, and I then decide I want to interact with the post (e.g., Like, Repost) I'm greeted with "<snipped nice greeting> You are not logged in to this server. Where is your account hosted?" That's the nature of decentralization but it is a rough edge. Are there any browser plugins or other ideas to smooth that edge? #Mastodon#fediverse

Unlike many other grammar checkers, Harper operates entirely offline, ensuring your data remains secure while providing real-time, high-performance corrections." One thing a little confusing to me is the settings. When you first install the plugin all settings are set to "default". I'm not sure if that means on or off so I went through each setting and made sure to explicitly turn on the ones that make sense to me. It won't make my writing magically better but I like that it processes everything locally and hopefully it will help me catch errors.

I love how I can open #pixelfed and scroll through some great photography and the occasional meme. I have seen a couple photos from world events but overall its like taking a dip in the pool rather than wading through a swamp.
Trying to figure out if #11ty can add code to the output. For photos, I want to automatically change 'img src' to 'img class="u-photo" src'. Anyone know if it's possible?
I've created a system on my site where I can upload photos to the Pixelfed instance I'm on and then pull the photo and content back down and post it on my site. Known as PESOS on the #indieweb. I'm using #11ty and the brilliant utility 11ty/eleventy-import. The utility pulls in the Atom feed from my Pixelfed instance at build time. I also had to figure out how to create a page template to use the metadata the import utility pulls down. Added bonus was discovering a few things on site that weren't necessarily broken, just needed some tuning up.
In Balboa park, San Diego, there are various International Houses. I spotted this flag I hadn't seen before flying outside the House of Scotland. It represents various Celtic nations.

I've had an account on the main instance of #Pixelfed since '23 and haven't posted. I'm wondering if I ought to move to a different instance. Clearly, I'm not a huge user yet but maybe every little bit of less bandwidth would help as new users on-board?

If you're an Apple user and I spoof your phone number in a call to the legitimate Apple Customer Support line (800-275-2273), I can force Apple to send you a system level "Apple Account Confirmation" prompt to all of your signed-in devices.
This approach is commonly used by a prolific voice phishing group to convince targets they really are in a support call with an Apple representative.
Today's deep dive into this weird world was made possible in part by a series of live phishing videos, tutorials and other secrets shared by an insider that show in unprecedented detail how these voice phishing scams can be so convincing.
Please share this story widely, because I learned a ton reporting this and frankly the various methods used by these groups to dox and target people are really slick.
From the story: "Besieged by scammers seeking to phish user accounts over the telephone, Apple and Google frequently caution that they will never reach out unbidden to users this way. However, new details about the internal operations of a prolific voice phishing gang show the group routinely abuses legitimate services at Apple and Google to force a variety of outbound communications to their users, including emails, automated phone calls and system-level messages sent to all signed-in devices."
I've found "The Swiss army knife of lossless video/audio editing". It's so fast you'll go looking for video to edit. #VideoEditing
Ever have a video that you need to just lop off the first few seconds where you had your finger in front of the lens? Or, maybe there are segments of a video you just want to separate into their own files. I've found the perfect utility to do all that and it works so fast you head will spin. Oh, and did I mention is it works on Windows, Mac and Linux?
This software is called Lossless Cut. This uses ffmpeg but you don't need to know anything about that. You don't have to learn any crazy switches or work at the command line or terminal. Just load a video, use the "scrubber" to find the spot where you want to split your video, rinse and repeat until you have them all marked then click export. Within seconds your files will be created. There's no time consuming re-encoding, you're done!
This isn't an editor in the sense where you'll be joining files and adding music, etc. It's just meant to cut up your video. You could then add your exports into your other editors and you've just saved time later because that editor is only working with the footage you want.
Per github, the following formats should work: MP4, MOV, WebM, Matroska, OGG and WAV. The following audio codecs: FLAC, MP3, Opus, PCM, Vorbis and AAC. Video codecs: H264, AV1, Theora, VP8, VP9 and H265 (needs hardware decoder)

I've abandoned one of the main reasons many people use #Obsidian, the Daily Note. I just don't need a new markdown file created every day for the rest of my life. Here's what I'm doing instead.
For quite awhile now I've been using a journaling process called Interstitial Journaling*. Basically this is just writing down what and where you are and any fleeting notes you have. Some days I might only have a line or two and some days quite a lot depending on what's happening in life. It works for me but creating new files everyday via the Daily Notes plugin is just overkill.
Now, I have One Big Text File (OBTF). I've seen a couple in the Obsidian community discuss this and after trying it for awhile it just works better for my brain.
Here's how it works: Right now, I have a file called "OBTF - 2024" and I'll make a new one on January 1, 2025. I don't have to create a new one, it could just go on and on but I think it will make more sense to create new notes. I could go a whole decade that way and only have 10 notes as opposed to 3650. I like this so much that after I started doing this for a week a couple months ago I went back and merged all my 2024 daily notes into my OBTF then deleted all of them.
Here's the way I do it:
Everyday open Obsidian to the current OBTF and create a new line at the top of the file like this:
"##### 2024-11-30 - Saturday"
This creates an H5 heading with the date and day and it's easily done with the Templater Plugin. Since this file scrolls I don't really need the day of the week on there but I like seeing it later on when I scroll down and there is another benefit I'll get into in a later post. There are other people who scroll to the bottom and create their new entry there but I like this kind of blog form of writing.
Under the date I start each new line with a "-" character which creates unordered lists. Sometimes I enter the time if that seems relevant and sometimes just some notes I think will be handy later. Something like:
13:00 got to the coffee shop to do some journaling
ran into Bill and Kate from church. They have a new puppy named Max
Simple things like that. Later I can search or scroll the OBTF and find the entry if I'm trying to remember the name of Bill and Kate's new dog.
Do use a OBTF? Give your current set up some thought, it might prove a better solution for you. In a post soon, I'll get into how I'm linking to my OBTF in a way that helps bring things together in a unique way.

#Obsidian #PKM Anyone have one of the latest eInk writing tablets (Kindle Scribe, Supernote, Remrkable, Boox, etc.)? I hate paper and these seem interesting. I do sync Obsidian to my phone and tablet but I've found that taking notes in a class setting is a little too fiddly. I could bring my laptop but then there's a screen popped open and I don't like that vibe. Plus the click-clacking of a keyboard. A notebook (Moleskine, etc.) is a heck of a lot cheaper than one of these eink devices and I probably shouldn't be adding one more device to my life but I thought I'd see what others are doing.
#microsoft #outlook wrote back on X with these details regarding the differences between the New Outlook and a pinned browser tab:
The 'New Outlook' for Windows is indeed more than just a wrapper around the web version. While pinning a tab in your browser is convenient, the full client offers several advantages:
Offline Access: You can access your emails, calendar, and contacts even when you're offline.
Performance: The desktop client is optimized for handling large volumes of emails and calendar events smoothly.
Advanced Features: It includes rich formatting, mailbox rules, and integration with other Microsoft 365 apps.
Customization: More extensive customization options, including add-ins and custom forms.
Security: Enhanced security features like encryption and advanced threat protection.
You can submit comments through this link https://msft.it/6019ob8u1 to assist us in improving your New Outlook experience.

Why doesn't #tiktok just build a progressive web app and start pushing people to that? I get that being in app stores is better for them but unless America blocks IP addresses there really wouldn't be a ban. Yeah you can get to the web version now on mobile but itt's a crap experience because they push the app on every video load.
In a Microsoft environment the Outlook and To Do combo are nice because they are tightly integrated and you don't need some external software. Flag an email and it gets into To Do almost instantly. If they could just add a boards feature (kanban) it would be great. They have boards in Planner but that isn't tightly integrated and you end up with a kludge that just doesn't work well. #Productivity

I've been using Phanpy (https://phanpy.social/) as my #Mastodon client of choice on mobile and occasionally on the desktop for about a year. The Boosts Carousel is too cool, and the threaded posts just add to the experience.
This evening, I was digging into the settings a bit more and whoa, next level! I always loved the Mastodon "advanced web interface" because it was like Tweetdeck of old. Phanpy lets you create columns like that on your desktop. Or, for your smaller screen devices, you can set up easy menus at the top of the screen or floating that let you easily switch between the items. For example, I have shortcuts/columns for my home feed, a list or 2 I have created, a couple hashtags I like to keep up with and one for my notifications.
Testing the #Kanban plugin for #Obsidian. I support and work on many different things, so I was thinking about not using it in the traditional Kanban method but rather lists of things all on one screen. Like a column header could be "SupportGroupA" then use that column for the things I do for that group. This actually kind of works until you go to archive the task. At that point you lose the context of what it was for because the header isn't listed with the task. I could do something like add data like a hashtag or something to the task, so I know what it relates to in the future. That looks redundant when you look a the columns. I could make separate boards but the defeats seeing everything at the same time. Should probably abandon trying to shoehorn this into Obsidian. Still working things out.

I don’t know how to put this without sounding like a lollipop, but I just want to say how much I enjoy the snapshots and tales you toot from daily life. Your dog glaring at crows. Your library book. I decided to style my #RSS feed to make it more human readable. Mostly because I can and figuring out how to is interesting to me. This post from @inautilo that links to this page sent me down this road. Down through the rabbit hole I found this stylesheet that makes it pretty easy to do if you have an RSS 2.0 feed aboutfeeds/tools/pretty-feed-v3.xsl. Well, easy if you control how your RSS is generated. #indieweb
I've been seeing more and more people start to shift back to reading their news via #RSS rather than relying on some algorithm to spoon feed them. I've also seen others wondering what this is all about. I've started to put together links to good articles as well as reader clients. If your have read or written an article about reading via feeds I'd love to have a link for my list. .What is RSS?
Sometimes when planning I like to look at a calendar for the year. I've created a simple 2025 calendar for #Obsidian in markdown if you like to do the same:
Markdown Calendar
Sure, there's a calendar on your laptop and phone but you need one in markdown too. Sometimes when you have a hammer you go around looking for nails…or something. Anyway here's one for 2025, copy and paste to Obsidian or your MD editor of choice.
v2.0.3 of my [#obsdian](https://haunted.computer/tags/obsdian) plugin md2html is released! now works in reading, preview, & edit modes, improved scraping of the rendered dom, faster rendering of raw md, a new help screen, & more fixes!
Sometimes, I invite someone to join #Mastodon, and I end up sharing the same links and information repeatedly.
Following the “manual until it hurts” #IndieWeb practice, after repeating the same things a few times, it is time to “automate” it. Well, in this case, just put everything into one blog post, I guess.

At the time I got married, 13 years ago, I lived in a flat. I liked it cos it was a short walk from the train station. Good for getting home after late nights out.
My wife moved in. One day she said, "The only problem with this flat is that it's a long walk from the station."
Long?
Turns out it's short if you go thru the woods & by the dark underpass, a route a woman would never think of taking.
And that was my 1st lesson in how we inhabit the same space but live in different worlds.
A reminder to myself and anyone who needs to hear it: Step away from your news feeds today. Go for a walk. Create something. You are doing yourself no favors being filled with anxiety and constantly refreshing the news. Be well, friends. #ElectionDay
My main use of Omnivore was to subscribe to newsletters and then easily save their highlights to #Obsidian. So, that's a whole workflow I need to figure out. If anyone is down that path, let me know what you're using in place.
Rethinking my over usage of DataView in #Obsidian. Switching to native Obsidian things such as the backlinks pane. I keep track of projects in my vault and previously had new notes for each meeting. I'm thinking about moving away from that and just have 1 per project "ProjectName Meeting" note that I open and add to with reverse-chronological blog-style headers. So, latest meeting at the top. This way, during a meeting I can just scroll down if someone has some kind of "why did we make this decision?" question. Some meetings I have a line or 2 and some are full of notes. We'll see how it scales.
Omnivore is about to be gone. I love how it integrates with #Obsidian so this makes me sad. Supposedly you can self host but idk if I want that overhead. Here's your 2 weeks notice. | Omnivore is joining ElevenLabs - Omnivore Blog https://blog.omnivore.app/p/omnivore-is-joining-elevenlabs "Next, all Omnivore users will be able to export their information from the service through November 15 2024, after which all information will be deleted. So after @pluralistic put the RSS bug in my brain, I had a thought.
What if, say, @Tusky , which is an awesome Masto app, integrated an RSS feed reader into it.
Hear me out…
You could have the option of following accounts as RSS feeds, so that if you follow news accounts or anything you don't want to miss a post from, there would be a feed reader pane.
Sort of like rolling your own algorithm, but better.
Hey just spitballing here. Maybe something like that already exists, seems like a good and simple idea.
Many great points in this @pluralistic thread on achieving meaningful change through joining a movement, but I wanted to highlight this note on "infrequently updated sites":
"I follow a bunch of people via RSS who only update a couple times per year."
Not having "a lot" to say shouldn't stop you from sharing your thoughts and experiences in a blog. And you didn't "fail" if you only have one or two posts.
I'm so used to Markdown in #Obsidian that I really hate when I have to use #OneNote. Yeah, it's pretty but try doing bulleted lists. It picks up formatting from other lines and you spend more time messing around with Format Painter trying to fix things.
I've just installed the Language Tool community plug-in into #Obsidian and it's now a perfect writing tool for me. Some other tools that you'd love:
- Longform (combine notes into a long-form manuscript)
- Pandoc (to export into PDF, docx, epub and more)
Any other tools you'd recommend for writers?
In the Microsoft ToDo app you might have reasons to delete all of your completed tasks. For example, maybe you track your completes in another app like I do and want to just keep the app running smoothly. Whatever the reason, it's easy to delete things one task at a time but it isn't as straight forward if you want to delete your tasks in bulk. To get you started, here a little how to.
In the ToDo Desktop app do the following:
Ensure the "Completed" smart list is showing
Click user icon in upper left
Click Settings
Scroll to Smart Lists and ensure the slider for Completed is set to On
Exit the settings menu and go the the Completed List
You should have different sections within the Completed list that correspond to you other lists (for example, Flagged Email)
Expand the list by clicking on the ">" icon next to the list name
Note if you have many many completed items in this list you may need to wait a minute before proceeding
Once the list is expanded, right click on the list title and select Delete Tasks (if the dialog box to click Delete Tasks doesn't show up, WAIT it can take minutes if you have a lot of tasks). You'll be asked to confirm you want to delete.
Depending on the number of tasks you have to delete it can take awhile. There is a kind of scrolling dot indicator at the top of the To Do window to indicate there is something happening.
Repeat the process for each lists you would like to clean up
if you deleted many items it might take a long time for everything to sync. Be patient! Clicking on your user icon in the upper left will show you if the app is still syncing.

Yesterday, I introduced my ~23 year old coworker to falstad.com, a website I've been playing with off and on since she was a baby.
Y'all, she got SO EXCITED that I thought she might have some kind of emotional breakdown in the office, and she spent like an hour just poking at the circuit simulator applet.
It warms my heart that falstad.com is still around and that some young people see the value in something as old as they are when they grew up in a world of walled gardens, gargantuan corporate platforms, and SEO bullshit.
I've always had a pen and paper next to my computer for jotting down notes and doing quick drawings. I really like how brainstorming in ink works; no ability to erase, only ever moving forward, a single line thickness, etc. Well, now I don't have to create as much waste because I remade it into a simple web app anyone can use: https://lab.levibeach.com/tools/sketch

Chess hasn’t been updated in almost 200 years and it’s obvious the devs have abandoned it. The greedy creators took your money and laughed all the way to the bank.
I remember back in 705 AD when chess was fun. Then they started adding stupid features no one wanted like “castling” and “en passant” instead of listening to player feedback and fixing game-breaking bugs. I’ve been complaining for years about the collision-detection glitch with the horsey. The ‘clipping-through-pieces’ bug has been abused to death and the lazy devs refuse to fix it.
Don’t support this awful behaviord and boycott this company.

Every once in awhile there is something big happening in the world and you want to avoid reading about it or stay clear of spoilers. Right now, we have the Summer Olympics starting in Paris so that could fall into either camp depending on your love of sports.
Fortunately, Mastodon makes it pretty easy to filter out posts containing key words. You can even set a time limit so that later on you don't have to remember to go back and turn off the filter. I did this once for the words "Biden" and "Trump" and my feed was blissfully silent on those topics. It isn't like your head is in the sand. I mean if something really big happens, you're going to hear about it through some other channel and you can simply disable the filter and posts with those key words will start flowing again.
Here's how to make it work:
Open Mastodon and click Edit Profile
On the left hand side, click "Filters" and the click the Add Filter button
Title your filter anything you want
Choose an exportation. From 30 minutes on up through never
Next, choose where you want the filter to apply. I usually choose "Home and Lists" and "Public Timelines". I leave the others because if I'm having a conversation, I don't want to miss something. And I don't look at profiles all the time so no need to filter those.
Next choose if you want to hide completely or behind a warning. This depends on your level of paranoia. If you choose to simply hide then you will get a message like this with the title of your filter show you which one did the hiding.
Next enter you keyword or phrase. If you want to add more than one, click "+Add Keyword" below the box. Note that this is an OR. That is, if you put in another keyword such as "Paris" in this case, you will be filtering our any posts with "Paris" in them, not just posts with "Olympics". That probably isn't what you want.
Click "Save Changes" and you're done!
Hope that helps you have a more peaceful feed of posts and avoid spoilers.

Well I'll admit that I stayed up a little bit later than I intended but I managed to hammer it out. Some thoughts on the #indieweb#smolweb#personalsites movement (whatever you want to call it) and, incidentally, the first update to my personal website in 6 months.
I don't know if the world needed another one of these think-pieces but for me, at least, it's a sort of statement of intent. At the very least I hope to put some more effort into my personal site.

If you want to archive your Mastodon or other app/site feed posts into Obsidian as separate post entries, I wrote a post about how to use the Simple RSS plugin to do that. I cover Mastodon and Grav RSS feeds. I've done the best I can do for now with instructions and a big thank you goes out to simple rss dev Monnier Antoine for being super helpful.

@liztai Your dataviews wil evolve and that might be a challenge when you have dataviews in your templates that you then likely want to update too.
My solution to that is to put a #DataviewJS snippet in the template that loads another note (call it a #Dataview#template) where the actual Dataview lives.
The code to load that other note:
```dataviewjs dv.span(await dv.io.load("/full_path_to/note.md")) ``` Works like a charm and it makes life much easier.
I've written a guide for people who want to draft papers in #Obsidian and then export to Microsoft #Word with "live" #Zotero citations. Many yearn for the "good old days" of the web. We could have those good old days back — or something even better — and if anything, it would be easier now than it ever was.
Sometimes I build crazy things. I get an idea for something and then I attempt to cobble it together. Mostly non-repeatable by anyone other than me but they keep me entertained. I'd rather spend hours trying to figure things like this out than play video games.
Recently I was thinking about how I could ease the creation of Mastodon Boosts in the form of using the Indieweb idea of a "repost-of".
From that link:
Why implement reposting:
Retweet from your own site. Incrementally supporting reposts, especially with POSSE to Twitter, enables you to "retweet" from your own site, rather than depending on Twitter to do so.
This in turn ensures a copy of anything you retweet on your own site, in case the original is deleted/removed etc.
The side benefit, for me, is I can search my own content for that link that I thought was interesting at some point.
Sure, I could just click the "Boost" button on my Mastodon client but that's just too easy. Instead, with my new system, I click the Bookmark button and that unleashes a crazy stream of events all in the effort of doing repost-of.
The next piece requires a bit of background. This site is built with Eleventy (aka 11ty). Eleventy is a simpler static site generator. Among other things you can use simple Markdown to create the pages. I have the wonderful PKM tool Obsidian sitting on top of my 11ty source folder. In Obsidian terms, the Source folder is an Obsidian "Vault". This lets me interact with the files using Obsidian as a kind of "Front End". That works well for site content. For 11ty code manipulation I can light up VS Code and work with the tiles that way instead.
Inside the above mentioned Obsidian Vault I am running a plugin called Simple RSS. And the Templater plugin. Templater does the magic of converting code slugs into usable things like dates.
Simple RSS does the work of pulling in the feed that I set up in Mastodon Bookmarks to RSS. For that you have to go to the plugin's setting and first create a "Feed Type". I used the creative name "Mastodon" for mine. It looks like this:
Next, you need to set up the feed. You choose a name, enter the url. The "Type" is the one you created above. The posts get pulled in an placed in the folder you enter into the path field. In the title field I use the title the feed has for each entry. That code is particular to this plugin. Then in the template I have a bunch of code for how I want the post to look on my website. Getting this right can be a little tricky because you don't have tons of control over the actual body section. Mine looks like:
You can have the plugin run on a schedule or you can just click the icon in your Obsidian sidebar and it will pull in the latest entries.
The template I've created is built with microformats that Bridgy understands. When my site is built and uploaded I have a script that sends a Webmention to Bridgy and it does the magic creating a repost on Mastodon on my behalf.
Yep, it's a kind of crazy but it was fun to figure out. And, if it stops working, not really the end of the world.
A few years ago I #degoogled my life by finding replacements for each and every one of the MANY google services and products I became reliant on over the years. I was spending around $30/m on their cloud products both for application development and personal use (Drive, Calendar, Mail etc.).
In just a few weeks I transitioned to a #selfHosted#nextcloud and haven't looked back. It handles my files, calendars, email, documents, backups, contacts and more - more than google even. A built in #WebDAV server allows you to sync your note apps like #joplin and #obsidian.
For #android users there's a wonderful app on #fdroid called #DAVx5 by @davx5@fosstodon.org, which allows you to auto sync your contacts & calendars. It works a treat. Earlier this evening I was trying to figure out if I could have Obsidian Tasks community plugin https://github.com/obsidian-tasks-group/obsidian-tasks alongside checklists. The Tasks plugin is nice for many reasons. One being that it prompts you with some values to help you set due dates and also automatically records when you complete a task. You can turn off the default stamping of completion dates but I find it handy.
In my mind, a checklist doesn't really need a date completed. Let's take a Packing List as an example. If I mark the "Shirts" item as done that merely indicates to me that the item is in my bag I have no reason to have a date on there.
The solution to this is custom statuses in Obsidian Tasks.
In Obsidian Tasks settings you can set all kinds of custom statuses. Here I have set 2 of them. What this allows is for me to create a note and put in the markdown something like:
- [?] Shirts
- [?] Socks
- [?] Jeans
When I click on one of the list entries, it fills the check box with 'o'. In other words, lets say I've packed my Shirts and Socks, the list would look like:
- [o] Shirts
- [o] Socks
- [?] Jeans
The advantage here is that the way I have these states set up in the settings, neither one is a 'DONE' state to the Tasks Plugin. Thus, we don't get the date stamp. Exactly what I want for this purpose.
"Trying to figure a way for Tasks and checklists to coexist in Obsidian. The Tasks plugin is handy because when you mark things complete it adds a date. There are reasons I like this. However, there are times when I might want a check list (e.g., Packing LIst) where I wouldn't care about the completion date just that the item is in my bag. #Obsidian @obsidianmd"
Pro tip: When you are done configuring your home router, open the web interface and go through each section. Take screenshots and paste them in to Obsidian or your PKM system of choice. Maybe even go as far as making a note as to why you set something the way you did. You'll thank me later. #Obsidian #pkm
Okay, this is ridiculous. The NYT is recommending Cascade somehow as the best dishwasher detergent. The last two people who serviced our (now 15-year-old) beloved and very quiet Miele dishwasher said don't ever put that crap in your machine.
We used the exact same pods recommended by NYT and it made our dishwasher stink and it didn't get things clean.
My wife ended up making a homemade version that uses mostly natural stuff plus a pinch of something like Oxyclean. Best detergent ever used, and that's all we use now.
In case anyone is interested, here's the recipe:
DIY Dishwasher Detergent
YIELD: 4 1/2 CUPS / 2.2 LB (ENOUGH FOR 36 LOADS OF DISHES)
1 cup / 225 g super washing soda (sodium carbonate)
1 cup / 225 g powdered oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate)
1/4 cup / 62 g table salt (sodium chloride)
50 drops lemon essential oil
12 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil
Washing soda and oxygen bleach are skin sensitizing. I recommend wearing nitrile gloves while you prepare this DIY and washing your hands afterward.
Mix dry ingredients. Add washing soda, powdered oxygen bleach, and table salt into a large, non-metallic mixing bowl. Whisk to combine.
Add essential oils and stir until everything is thoroughly combined.
The essential oils will accumulate in small clusters at first. Keep
stirring to break them apart.
Transfer the detergent powder into an airtight glass jar or storing
container. Store sealed in a dry place, protected from moisture.
Use about 2 tablespoons per load.
Seems like it wouldn't be that hard to add to all their products while they're at it.
When Nichelle Nichols told Gene Roddenberry that she wanted to quit #StarTrek he begged her to sleep on it.
That night she met Martin Luther King Jr. and he told her she simply could not quit.
“Gene Roddenberry has opened a door for the world to see us. If you leave, that door can be closed."
She went back in on monday and stayed a part of the franchise.
When NASA realized it was a sausage party they recruited her to spearhead their diversity program and she brought countless women and people of color into the space program.
After filming her first season of Star Trek Discovery, Sonequa Martin-Green met Nichelle on the red carpet premier and tried to tell her how hard she had worked not to let her or the franchise down.
Nichelle pulled her in close and whispered "Take care. This is yours now."
One year and one week and one day ago she left us mortals. but the changes and progress she helped make will always be with us.
“The principles of the #Fediverse, with an emphasis on local control, quality content, and social value, are far more aligned with our public purposes than those of avowedly commercial networks like #Threads or #Twitter.”
If you are dreaming of exploring the beautiful sights and cultures of Europe, you may need to take an extra step before booking your flight. Starting in 2024, American passport holders will need to apply for an online authorization form called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) to visit 30 European countries.
ETIAS is not a visa, but rather a security check that will allow you to stay in Europe for up to 90 days within any 180-day period23. It will cost you 7 euros (about $8) and will be valid for three years or until your passport expires.
The ETIAS system is similar to the ESTA program that the U.S. implemented in 2008 for travelers from certain countries. It is designed to enhance border security and prevent terrorism and irregular migration.
To apply for ETIAS, you will need to fill out a form online or on your mobile phone, providing personal information, passport details and answers to some questions about your health and criminal history. You should apply at least a month before your trip, as the approval process may take up to 30 days in some cases.
You can check the full list of countries that require ETIAS here(PDF) ''. Some of the popular destinations include France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Greece.
So don’t let this new requirement stop you from planning your next European adventure. Just make sure you have your ETIAS approval ready before you board your plane, train, bus or cruise ship. Happy travels! 😊
@jessica I think your question is really about backfeeding of "likes" and "comments" to your site via webmention. I'm not really sure why anyone would question an outgoing webmention. I've seen arguuments against backfeeds because someone commenting, for example on Mastodon, and having it land on a webpage they never interacted with is confusing and disconcerting for some.
Airbus Designs a Space Station with Artificial Gravity
The International Space Station has been orbiting the Earth every 20 years, with astronauts continuously on board. Some of their missions have lasted as long as a year, showing weightlessness's effect on the human body. To truly live and work in space for years, we'll need an artificial gravity system to help astronauts protect their bone and muscle mass and prevent other issues like vision loss. Airbus released new designs for a new space station called LOOP, a multi-purpose orbital module with many features, including a centrifuge to give astronauts artificial gravity.
People use large language models to generate text and images, but the underlying transformer architecture can work on any kind of data. A group of researchers wanted to know what would happen if you fine-tuned a large language model on only astronomical data. According to their paper, the model could classify astrophysical phenomena, distinguish between types of gamma-ray bursts, and calculate the redshift of galaxies. This could be a handy assistant for future research.
Frankly, with all its current woes, #Microsoft is missing a huge opportunity here by not turning #Windows into something that people might want to use - that is, something streamlined, more secure, and more private. Then again, this IS Microsoft we're talking about.
I used ChatGPT to craft a Python script today that edited 500+ markdown files (my imported Raindrop.io bookmarks) from my #Obsidian vault. It moved text in the form of an inline properties field for URLs from the body of the note into the YAML front matter. I knew next to nothing about #Python.
If you're like me, you probably hate the Twitter algorithm. You know, the one that decides what tweets you see on your timeline based on some mysterious criteria. The one that shows you tweets from people you don't follow, or tweets that are hours or days old. The one that buries the tweets from your favorite accounts or topics under a pile of irrelevant noise.
Well, I have a solution for you: Twitter Lists. Twitter Lists are a way to create your own custom timelines based on the accounts or topics you choose. You can make as many lists as you want, and they will only show you the tweets from the accounts you add to them. No more algorithm messing with your feed!
Here's how to set up a Twitter List on mobile:
Go to your profile
Tap on Lists.
Tap on the plus icon in the lower right corner to create a new list.
Give your list a name and a description (optional).
Tap on Create.
Tap on Add members to start adding accounts to your list. You can search by username or browse by category.
Tap on Done when you're finished adding accounts.
On your computer you can add people to Twitter lists on a web browser by following these steps:
Go to the Twitter website and log in.
Click "More" then “Lists” from the menu at the side.
Click the “New List” icon at the top.
Fill out the Name, Description (optional), and set the list to either be Public or Private.
Click “Next”.
Click “Add” on the Suggested accounts that pop up if they are relevant. If not, click “Done”.
To add people to your list, click on their username on any of your existing Twitter streams and click “Add To List”.
To add people you are following to your list I find it easiest to the following:
go to https://twitter.com/YOUR_TWITTER_NAME_HERE/following
Click on the username of the person you want to add to your list, , click on the three dots, select Add/remove from Lists, and then choose the List you want to add them to
Not going to lie, it's very tedious and time-consuming. You have to do this for every single person you want to add. Why can't there be a faster and easier way to do this? Like a drag-and-drop feature or a bulk selection option. At this point in the tire fire that is Twitter, this isn't likely to improve. I used the opportunity to go through my Following list and unfollow accounts that don't tweet much or lately and the ones I've lost interest in. Then I added to my new List the ones I really don't want to miss. Then, slowly when I have some slack time, I add more.
The plus side of all this tediousness is that, looking at the posts on my new List, I'm seeing posts from accounts I've forgotten about and didn't even know they are still tweeting! That, my friends, is why the algorithm sucks.
That's it! You can now access your list by going back to the Lists tab and tapping on it. You can also pin your list to your home screen for easy access by tapping on the pin icon next to it.
You can create as many lists as you want, and edit or delete them anytime. You can also make your lists public or private, and follow other people's lists if they are public.
Twitter Lists are a great way to customize your Twitter experience and avoid the annoying algorithm. Give them a try and let me know what you think!
If you're looking for a pair of wireless earbuds that can deliver high-quality sound, block out unwanted noise, and last for hours on a single charge, you might want to check out the Soundcore Space A40 earbuds. These are the latest noise cancelling earbuds from soundcore, a brand known for its innovative audio products.
The Soundcore Space A40 earbuds have several features that make them stand out from the crowd. First of all, they have adaptive noise cancelling technology that automatically adjusts to your environment. Whether you're in a quiet office, a busy street, or a noisy airplane, the earbuds will reduce noise by up to 98% and let you enjoy your personal space.
Secondly, they have soundcore's pioneering double-layer diaphragm drivers that deliver sound with strong bass, clear mids, and bright treble. The earbuds also support LDAC technology for high-resolution sound and have a HearID Sound 2.0 feature that lets you customize your sound profile according to your hearing preferences.
Thirdly, they have an impressive battery life of up to 50 hours with the charging case. You can listen for up to 10 hours on a single charge and get an extra 4 full charges from the case. The earbuds also support wireless charging and fast charging for convenience.
Lastly, they have a comfortable and lightweight design that fits snugly in your ears. The earbuds come with 5 sizes of flexible silicone ear tips to ensure a stable and noise-blocking fit. One of my favorite features that they go into pairing mode as soon as the case is opened. This way, once paired, they are ready to go by the time you put them into your ears. Also, they can be used in mono mode in either ear. Even with hear-through modes with the app I like to use a single earbud when walking to keep alert to traffic or other people.
The Soundcore Space A40 earbuds are a great choice for anyone who wants to enjoy high-quality sound and noise cancellation in any situation. They are available in white or black colors and come with a USB-C cable and a user manual. You can buy them from soundcore's official website or from Amazon for $99.99.
I started to collect information to write this post and came across this excellent post: 10 quick Mastodon tips. It is a great overview and includes some nice graphics to explain things. I highly recommend reading it to familiarize yourself with how Mastodon works.
These tips and tricks are for once you've set up your account and now need to know what to get things done. They are a bit redundant if you read the link above but I'll leave them here anyway. I plan to add to this page as I find other useful tips.
An easy way to do this is to use debirdify. debirdify uses the Twitter API to find any users you follow that are on Mastodon. All you do is authorize debirdify to access your Twitter account and it cans through looking for links to Mastodon in Twitter profiles (this is why it is important to link to Mastodon in your Twitter profile as above) 2025-12-03 Sadly, this site is no longer available. If you are a developer, the author has the code on GitHub - pruvisto/debirdify
Enable a Tweetdeck-like interface on your laptop
Open Mastodon and then click Preferences > Appearance then check "Enable advanced web interface"
If you then click on a hashtag or search for one a new column will open. If you want to make that new column a permanent part of your interface, click the 'Show Settings' button at the top of the column. Then click Pin.
Once you pin it you can open the column settings again and add more hashtags. You can have it include any or all additional hashtags or block tweets that include certain hashtags.
The San Diego Zoo is a wonderful place for families. I’ve been going there my whole life and always enjoy seeing the animals and the smiles on the face of kids seeing their favorite animals often for the first time. If you have never been to the Zoo, the first thing you’ll find out rather quickly after you enter the gates is that it is built on a series of hills and valleys. Some of them much steeper than others.
The Zoo does offer solutions to help with getting around. There is the Bus Tour which takes you around the park and a guide points out the animals. There is also a Kangaroo Bus that lets you hop on and off at different points in the park. Another new addition is the Discovery Cart Tour which is a more personal tour than the Bus and might be good if you have a large family. However, these can add to your expenses for the day, and to see things up close, you need to get off the roads that those vehicles travel on.
Most people fail to come up with a good plan, so the hills don’t wear them out too early in the day. All too often I see parents struggling to push their strollers up hills or dealing with fussy young kids who are worn out. It isn’t their fault; nobody tells you about this before you go. Once there, the excitement takes over, you grab a map at the gate and try to come up with a plan. Often, it’s just pick something you want to see and head that way.
That’s why I wrote this guide. I’ve spent lots of time thinking about this and wandering around the Zoo trying out different paths to determine the best zoo routes. That said, hills are unavoidable. This guide will show you how to take as many of them as possible going downhill. My goal here is to help people enjoy the Zoo as much as I do. There is no wrong way to walk to the Zoo but these family-friendly zoo tips can help make it easier.
A couple of points before we start. First, I’m not affiliated with the San Diego Zoo, just a long time Member and fan. Second, this isn’t meant to be a guide to the animals you will see on the routes. Take your time, enjoy the sights and sounds, and refer to this along the way.
Let’s go!
Front Street
Once you enter the Zoo you’ll be on Front Street. Grab a map or get the Zoo's official app for iOS or Android. You’ll need the map because I’ll be referring to “map locator’ numbers on the map. The biggest problem I have with the map is that it is not to scale. Looking at it makes it very hard to figure out which path to go down. In a couple of confusing spots, an employee is posted to help you out with directions.
If you are standing with your back to the entrance, you could head to the left and visit the Reptile House, Reptile Walk, and the Children’s Zoo (currently closed for construction). There are no big hills there so I tend to save this for the end of the day. Because of that, this guide will start you off going into the heart of the zoo.
1️⃣ Find Treetops Way between Map Locator 4 and the ticket booths and follow that to the Orangutan enclosure on the right.
Monkey Trail
2️⃣ Follow the brief Orangutan Trail until it exits back onto Treetops way right near Zoo Brew.
3️⃣ Take Treetops Way left toward the zoo exit and shortly you will see Monkey Trail. on your right.
To Tiger Trail
4️⃣ Follow Monkey Trail down to Tiger Trail. Keep left when you see the sign for Tiger Trail.
5️⃣ Follow Tiger Trail down to the tigers. You will be passing by the lower part of their enclosure and there are 3 opportunities to see them. If they are down by the glass, it is a nice up-close view.
At the end of Tiger Trail, you will see the plaques as reminders of donors that made these exhibits possible. As you pass by them, the trail leads to the left and down to Hippo Trail.
🔅 TIGER TIP: If you missed a good view of the tigers because they were at the top of the enclosure, turn right just past the plaques and before you head down to Hippo Trail. You’ll go up a walk that is a bit steep but it is worth it for the tigers. The walk ends at the door to the aviary. After you view the tigers, head back down to Hippo Trail.
6️⃣ Hippo Trail ends at Map Locator 14.
At that point, go to your right. The middle of the zoo doesn’t have a Locator. It is the elevator up to the Bashor Bridge. The ground floor of the elevator is right near The Pagoda.
7️⃣ Take the elevator (or climb the 116 stairs) up.
At the top of the elevator, you will be by Bashor Bridge.
1️⃣ Head across the bridge toward Map Locator 20 and then go left. Shortly, you’ll see Map Locator 19.
2️⃣ Continue left, enjoying the enclosures on the way to Map Locator 17.
3️⃣ At Map Locator 17, cross the street to Polar Bear Plunge. This area is a loop. be sure to go all the way in to see the reindeer. The loop will take you through the small gift shop and back out onto Park Way.
4️⃣ Before you cross the street back to Locator 17, go to the right a little way. You’ll see the valley Highway 163 runs through, and you will have a unique view of Balboa Park’s Cabrillo Bridge.
5️⃣ Cross back over the street and continue on downhill to the right (not back toward the bridge). Shortly after the zebras, you will find a wood walkway called Eagle Trail. Follow that wood walkway along past the eagles.
6️⃣ At the end of Eagle Trail, you will see the entrance to the Asian Leopards exhibit.
7️⃣ Go straight ahead and visit the leopards and the red pandas. After the red pandas, you will emerge back onto Park Way not far from The Pagoda and the elevators back up to the Bashor Bridge.
Back at the top of the elevator, you will be by Bashor Bridge again.
1️⃣ Head across the bridge toward Map Locator 20 and then go right. You’ll see the Elephant Odyssey sign where you will go left and through the tar pits exhibit. The tar pits lead to the elephants.
2️⃣ Keep to the left as you emerge from the tar pits area, and you’ll see the lions.
To Africa Rocks
3️⃣ Follow that path past the elephants all the way around and continue past the Sabretooth Grill. Just after Map Locator 10, the path winds through the Kopje exhibit and on to Map Locator 9. Here, you will be at a kind of crossroad.
4️⃣ Follow the path downhill to the right toward Africa Rocks. Africa Rocks is a long winding path all the way back down to the heart of the zoo. Just past the penguins, you’ll see Hua Mae Cafe.
Across the street from Hua Mae Cafe and to your left as you emerge from the penguin exhibit, you’ll see the entrance to the sun bear forest.
Follow the path to Sun Bear Forest as it takes you through the trees and past the sun bears. The path emerges at Map Locator 11.
7️⃣ Go right here and follow the street back down to the Hua Mae Cafe area.
8️⃣ At Map Locator 13, turn left and head down to the elevator.
Back at the top of the elevator, we will go a different way this time.
1️⃣ From the elevator go toward Treetops Café. Follow the trail between Treetops Café and Albert’s.
2️⃣ Keep to the right for Monkey Trail and follow Monkey Trail past the Gorillas.
3️⃣ At the Monkey Tales & Forest Tales sign, keep to the left to follow Hippo Trail past the Pigmy Hippos. This portion of Hippo Trail exits back onto Treetops way. There will be restrooms on your left.
4️⃣ Go left here and follow the signs for Aviary Trail on your right.
5️⃣ You will reach Owens Aviary. Go through the doors and continue following the trail through the aviary. Shortly after you exit the doors at the end of the upper portion of Owens Aviary, you will see the doors for the lower portion. Go back inside and visit that portion.
Exit the aviary and continue down the trail toward Center Street. The trail ends across Center Street from Map Locator 11.
6️⃣ Cross the street and follow the path up the hill to the right. You will be passing the bears on the left. This is a bit of a hill but take your time and enjoy the bears.
7️⃣ The hill ends with Map Locator 8 on your right and Sydney’s Grill on your left. Continue left around Sydney’s Grill to the Urban Jungle. This area is a loop, keep to the left past the giraffes and follow the trail all the way around. Go into the Outback and visit the koalas. If you walk through to the end of the koala exhibit, go to your right. If you continue straight, you will end up in Africa Rocks. Go right and back toward Sydney’s Grill.
8️⃣ Keep to the left and across from Map Locator 8, follow Koalafornia Boardwalk back toward the Zoo Entrance.
1️⃣ From near the zoo entrance and Map Locator 4, go left to the Reptile House near Map Locator 3.
2️⃣ Go left as you exit the reptile house and down Reptile Walk. The Reptile Mesa is a big loop. Make your way back to Map Locator 4 when you are finished.
Last month, a week or so before Christmas, I received an email from Lt. Denise Garcia of the U.S. Navy. Now email from the Navy isn’t something that occurs often for me so I opened that one ahead of the others in my in-box that day. That email was like getting an early Christmas present as it contained an invitation to join 7 other bloggers aboard a Los Angeles Class Fast-Attack Nuclear Submarine.
I had to read it a couple of times. Really? Me?
I learned that my friend Jenn Van Grove, who I know from Twitter and several Twitter Meetups, had included my name on a list she gave to Lt. Garcia. Also, ours would be the first group of bloggers that the Navy has invited on a submarine.
Our amazing trip was this past Friday, January 15, 2010.
The group of us and Denise met Thursday night at Celadon in Hillcrest for dinner and as a kind oficebreakerr. This was something we arranged on our own but I think it really added to the trip. Eachof us knew some of the others but not everyone. Denise was able to answer questions as well as give us some information about what we would be experiencing the next day. Good food, good times and an early evening as we had to be at the submarine base in Pt. Loma at 7:30 a.m. on Friday.
We met Friday in a parking lot just outside the base. Here, Denise gave us permits to drive onto the base and we carpooled together the short distance from there to the pier where the
submarine would be. We were each given name tags and divided into 2 groups to facilitate tours through the sub. For security reasons, it wasn’t until then that we learned that we would be aboard the USS Hampton (SSN 767)
At 8:00 things came to a stop as we had Colors and the Star Spangled Banner played. Then it was across a gangway to the sub, into an open hatch, and down a vertical ladder into the sub. It was immediately apparent why the 2 groups. Having all 8 of us in one spot would just clog things up.
We all went to the Wardroom where we were briefed on what we would be doing for the day.
My group was the first to go up to the control room and attack center where I was able to watch the men control the sub. I also got to go into the sonar room where I was given a set of headphones to listen in on what we could hear around us.
There is so much information coming at you on these screens. It was incredible. The screens in the control center aren’t dedicated to a specific task. One minute they could be displaying sonar contacts and the next they could be displaying a live video feed from the periscope. Also, interesting is that these systems are COTS (commercial off the shelf) which keeps costs low and enables them to be easily switched out or upgraded.
Around 10:00 we reached our dive point. I was in the control room when the order was given. The Hampton was put at a 5-degree angle down and we started to slip beneath the surface. I was really looking forward to this. It was quick and silent. I was standing by a monitor that was receiving a video feed from periscope 2 and shot this little video of our dive:
When we had reached a certain depth we went through a procedure the men call “Angles and Dangles.” During this procedure, the sub dives deep and then comes back up, both at a steep angle. You need to grab hold of something because at 25 degrees you are really leaning! One of the reasons for going through this procedure is that everything not secure will fall. Falling objects make noise and noise and submarines do not mix. Silence is your friend.
Also demonstrated for us was the crew coming to battle stations. A flurry of activity in very limited space occurs. Orders and acknowledgments fly. The bunch of us press ourselves out of the way as best we can in the tight control room. Everything is like clockwork. Torpedo tubes flooded. The order was given to fire! A quick shift in air pressure occurs that makes your ears pop as the torpedo leaves the tube. Today it was a ‘water slug’ which is basically a flooded torpedo tube with no torpedo in it. Torpedo away, the sub turns and moves. Fast.
We went down to the torpedo room where the sub has 4 torpedo tubes and
watched a demonstration of a torpedo, this one inert for training purposes, being loaded into the tube. The torpedoes are 19ft long and only slightly less in diameter than the tube. Here is a picture looking down torpedo tube #1. The Pacific Ocean is about 20 feet away on the other side of that door at the end.
Loading that torpedo is a precision maneuver with no room for error. Orders are shouted, acknowledgments given fore and aft of the torpedo as it is moved on its hydraulic rails into the tube.
After the weapons demonstration we made our way back to the Wardroom where lunch was served. With all the excitement of the morning, I was hungry! The chef on the Hampton did not disappoint.
There was a menu at each of our places. From the soup options, I chose tomato and, while you could have had all three deserts I chose the ice cream. There was also fresh bread and pitchers of water, Diet Coke, and juice. Everything was good.
After lunch, the groups switched places. The others went up to the control room and my group went to the places they had been in the morning.
We went back to the torpedo room for a closer look at the controls and the tubes themselves. We also saw the auxiliary diesel engine, crew meeting room, crew mess room, and galley.
Later we went up to the control room again. I believe we were around 60ft below the surface and we had a demonstration of an ‘Emergency Blow’. This is where air is forced into the ballast tanks and the sub rises rapidly to the surface. Felt like a quick elevator ride.
We saw and did so much it is really had to distill it into a blog post. Everyone I encountered was ready to answer questions and proud of their amazing machine. And they should be. I am honored to have been included on this historic first blogger submarine embark.
Thanks to Commodore Genoble, Lt. Garcia, and the men of the USS Hampton for your hospitality and an amazing adventure!
