fun fact anker docking stations are NOT designed to swap the usb cord between computers. ymmv but it landed me in the "usb last connected...." loop. I think i finally resolved it completely unplugging everything from the dock, rebooting the machine, and then making the anker software update/repair the firmware. It finally settled down. GEESH. You'd think that'd be basic functionality that a dock or usb hub might float.
Found the power brick for this Atom x5-Z8350 1.44GHz, 4GB RAM small form factor PC. It runs Win 11 (that's what it came with) but sllowwly. Not sure what I'll do with it. It's too slow to do anything with the Windows GUI. Maybe something headless? Ideas welcome.

I was thinking about #Obsidian, a growing knowledge base and linking. In the beginning, as you make notes on a topic, you don't make links because you don't know the facts are related yet. It would be cool, and maybe a good use of AI, if there were a tool that could go back and link all your notes and build the knowledge graph. Think of one of those boards in detective shows where they just start pinning facts to the board. Victim, crime scene, suspect 1 then some clue is revealed and everything links up and you have a case.

It's been a while since I posted about my favorite Fediverse client, Phanpy https://phanpy.social/. It's a web app that works well on every device from desktop to mobile. It handles long threads like a dream and skillfully manages reposts in a unique horizontal scrolling UI. On a wider screen you can enable columns and keep on top of everything at the same time (if you used Tweetdeck on the bird site back in the day, you'll love it). I honestly can't imagine being part of the Fediverse without it.

ICYMI, Joe Menn had a good scoop this week about how the US govt is getting set to ban TP-Link devices from being sold in the United States. If that happens, a whole lot of small businesses will probably need to find new networking gear. I have never trusted TP-Link devices and have repeatedly warned readers away from them. They have a history of flooding the market with massively underpriced hardware, and this is a market where generally speaking the cheapest means the most hackable. Here's one reply I sent to a reader in 2023 who inquired about finding what appeared to be an undocumented cloud login page.
"I realize that NYT and others constantly recommend TPLink b/c of the features vs price point, but I would stay away from this brand, and any that force you to register "in the cloud" before you can use them as local networking devices. You do not want your router to do anything except when you tell it do so, and to my mind all this cloud business being attached to network storage and local network things is troubling."
"If you are at all confident around computers, I'd recommend getting something like a high-end ASUS router and then installing an open source firmware on it, like Tomato or something. Because the default software that is on most routers is complete garbage, and often turns on a lot of stuff you really don't want turned on, or has other stupid default settings. #11ty follow-up: I pull posts (PESOS) from Mastodon to my own site via 11ty/import plugin. I then have some automation that crossposts to Bluesky via webmention and brid.gy. Earlier I noticed that hashtags weren't being sent as links to Bluesky. Thanks to @snarfed I learned that is because I needed to have the class "p-category" on my hashtags. Well that's fine but I'm pulling these in automagically and they aren't formatted that way. Changing the code by hand after import is a non-starter. Fortunately, I was able to figure out how to create an 11ty filter that will watch and change the code at build time. Here's the filter that changes "class='mention hashtag" to "class='mention p-category"

I am a huge fan of obsidian to write notes from research papers. But manually managing the note creation with all the bibtex info is also a pain. So my husband and I decided to automate it. I haven't really had a problem with finding and installing distros. I think where my #Linux knowledge falls down is all around disks. From Linux, I want to be able to share a drive or partition to Windows or Linux machines. From Linux, I want to be able to map a drive to a Windows share. Similarly, I need to understand how to use external USB drives like flash drives or even old-school Blu-ray or DVD drives.
I've seen Zorin OS and Ultramarine mentioned as good distros for people moving from Windows to Linux. Which one would you recommend for a Linux noob?

After listening to the Johnny Fever mix for a while, I remembered that there are Internet archives of hours or radio DJ sets, recorded off the air on tape, digitized, and uploaded to the Internet. I found this hour of Dan Ingram on WABC New York from September 1976.
I was a teenager then, living in that area, and might have listened to that hour live!
But listening to it for a little while this morning reminded me that I didn't much like WABC; I was a 99X guy and, in the 80s, WBAB. Listening also reminded me that 99% of the pop music in the 1970s was bad. However, Sturgeon's Law probably applies here.

As the fan of a West Coast #MLB National League team I'm always scrolling down the list of all the teams to see the standings. The default MLB URL lists AL first then east to west. It's a lot of scrolling all season long. I discovered quite by accident that MLB has unique URLs by team that put the division of your team at the top. Edit and save yourself a shortcut or favorite with your teams name in place of "padres" and save yourself a season of scrolling.

Spent way too much time trying to get an image link to work properly inside a table in \#Obsidian. The pipe to indicate the width has to be escaped (obvious in retrospect), and a link target with spaces has to be enclosed in angle brackets. Who the fuck came up with that harebrained syntax? Also, if you use Android, the Duck Duck Go browser is worth installing even if just for the included tracker protector. It sets up as a vpn that blocks all the various apps from trying to ping out to various services. I've been using it for a couple years. Mine has blocked 879 in the last week.

If you're in KDE and can't tell where the edges of your @obsidian windows are (for example if you use Solarized theme in Obsidian and the terminal window behind it), turn on "Native frame" for the "Window frame style" option under Advanced in the Appearance settings.
With Obsidian, using multi-file search and replace in a text editor like Bbedit or Notepad++ is a huge time saver for editing properties or just notes in general. Much better than trying to use the handicapped plugin that tries to do the same thing. \#Obsidian\#ObsidianMD\#PKM

Super handy #Obsidian community plugin for writing: Harper. From the Read Me: "The Harper plugin is a powerful, privacy-first grammar and spell-checking tool designed specifically for Obsidian users. Unlike many other grammar checkers, Harper operates entirely offline, ensuring your data remains secure while providing real-time, high-performance corrections." One thing a little confusing to me is the settings. When you first install the plugin all settings are set to "default". I'm not sure if that means on or off so I went through each setting and made sure to explicitly turn on the ones that make sense to me. It won't make my writing magically better but I like that it processes everything locally and hopefully it will help me catch errors.

I've been learning a ton about the working of #11ty It isn't really that hard, I just needed to wrap my mind around a few things. As a result, I rebuilt my site to be more data driven. It will be easier to use Obsidian as my editing UI now because I can control layout with yaml frontmatter instead of having to remember to use some HTML in my post body. Obsidian templates make that easy, its just hard to read and prone to editing errors.

I've created a system on my site where I can upload photos to the Pixelfed instance I'm on and then pull the photo and content back down and post it on my site. Known as PESOS on the #indieweb. I'm using #11ty and the brilliant utility 11ty/eleventy-import. The utility pulls in the Atom feed from my Pixelfed instance at build time. I also had to figure out how to create a page template to use the metadata the import utility pulls down. Added bonus was discovering a few things on site that weren't necessarily broken, just needed some tuning up.

Today's deep dive into this weird world was made possible in part by a series of live phishing videos, tutorials and other secrets shared by an insider that show in unprecedented detail how these voice phishing scams can be so convincing.

I do sync Obsidian to my phone and tablet but I've found that taking notes in a class setting is a little too fiddly. I could bring my laptop but then there's a screen popped open and I don't like that vibe. Plus the click-clacking of a keyboard. A notebook (Moleskine, etc.) is a heck of a lot cheaper than one of these eink devices and I probably shouldn't be adding one more device to my life but I thought I'd see what others are doing.

In a Microsoft environment the Outlook and To Do combo are nice because they are tightly integrated and you don't need some external software. Flag an email and it gets into To Do almost instantly. If they could just add a boards feature (kanban) it would be great. They have boards in Planner but that isn't tightly integrated and you end up with a kludge that just doesn't work well. #Productivity

I've been using Phanpy (https://phanpy.social/) as my #Mastodon client of choice on mobile and occasionally on the desktop for about a year. The Boosts Carousel is too cool, and the threaded posts just add to the experience.
This evening, I was digging into the settings a bit more and whoa, next level! I always loved the Mastodon "advanced web interface" because it was like Tweetdeck of old. Phanpy lets you create columns like that on your desktop. Or, for your smaller screen devices, you can set up easy menus at the top of the screen or floating that let you easily switch between the items. For example, I have shortcuts/columns for my home feed, a list or 2 I have created, a couple hashtags I like to keep up with and one for my notifications.
Testing the #Kanban plugin for #Obsidian. I support and work on many different things, so I was thinking about not using it in the traditional Kanban method but rather lists of things all on one screen. Like a column header could be "SupportGroupA" then use that column for the things I do for that group. This actually kind of works until you go to archive the task. At that point you lose the context of what it was for because the header isn't listed with the task. I could do something like add data like a hashtag or something to the task, so I know what it relates to in the future. That looks redundant when you look a the columns. I could make separate boards but the defeats seeing everything at the same time. Should probably abandon trying to shoehorn this into Obsidian. Still working things out.

My main use of Omnivore was to subscribe to newsletters and then easily save their highlights to #Obsidian. So, that's a whole workflow I need to figure out. If anyone is down that path, let me know what you're using in place.
Rethinking my over usage of DataView in #Obsidian. Switching to native Obsidian things such as the backlinks pane. I keep track of projects in my vault and previously had new notes for each meeting. I'm thinking about moving away from that and just have 1 per project "ProjectName Meeting" note that I open and add to with reverse-chronological blog-style headers. So, latest meeting at the top. This way, during a meeting I can just scroll down if someone has some kind of "why did we make this decision?" question. Some meetings I have a line or 2 and some are full of notes. We'll see how it scales.

Not having "a lot" to say shouldn't stop you from sharing your thoughts and experiences in a blog. And you didn't "fail" if you only have one or two posts.
I'm so used to Markdown in #Obsidian that I really hate when I have to use #OneNote. Yeah, it's pretty but try doing bulleted lists. It picks up formatting from other lines and you spend more time messing around with Format Painter trying to fix things.
I've just installed the Language Tool community plug-in into #Obsidian and it's now a perfect writing tool for me. Some other tools that you'd love:
- Longform (combine notes into a long-form manuscript)
- Pandoc (to export into PDF, docx, epub and more)

Just discovered property names in [#Obsidian](https://ack.nerdfight.online/tag/obsidian) are case sensitive.
Fortunately it was easy to rename/merge properties with the core properties plugin. Going forward, I'll use lowercase for them. That's my usual practice but I'd gotten lazy. The iPhone keyboard defaults to uppercase for the first character on a line.

I've lived in the USA my whole life. I've decided to teach myself to think in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit when it comes to the weather. I started using Zettel notes (Android) a few weeks ago for this very purpose. Be careful. During my testing I added my whole vault to Zettel and it worked well. Then I deleted the Zettel repository and it really messed things up and deleted my Obsidian notes. User error for sure but it's worth noting. I'm still using Zettel but pointed at its own folder within my vault. This keeps things more separate in case of disaster but gives Obsidian access to all my Zettel notes. Lessons learned. Thank goodness for backups!

I have a trip coming up so I've been trying out this #Obsidian plugin for building Itineraries. https://github.com/coddingtonbear/obsidian-itinerary?tab=readme-ov-file. It's a nice way to keep things in markdown and have the plugin present them in the form of a calendar. Using it in conjunction the Templater plugin is nice because you don't have to remember the syntax for making an entry. Not really sure if it makes sense to use over some kind of calendar app or an app like Tripit. Testing continues.

Found an interesting plugin for Obsidian called Webpage Export https://github.com/KosmosisDire/obsidian-webpage-export. Really interesting for building simple static websites. You'd build you things in Obsidian as usual, click export et viola you have static html to upload wherever you want. I'm still considering where it will fit in my online life. I may rip and replace everything or just add on as a digital garden.

Well I'll admit that I stayed up a little bit later than I intended but I managed to hammer it out. Some thoughts on the #indieweb#smolweb#personalsites movement (whatever you want to call it) and, incidentally, the first update to my personal website in 6 months.
I don't know if the world needed another one of these think-pieces but for me, at least, it's a sort of statement of intent. At the very least I hope to put some more effort into my personal site.

@liztai Your dataviews wil evolve and that might be a challenge when you have dataviews in your templates that you then likely want to update too.
My solution to that is to put a #DataviewJS snippet in the template that loads another note (call it a #Dataview#template) where the actual Dataview lives.
The code to load that other note:

I've written a guide for people who want to draft papers in #Obsidian and then export to Microsoft #Word with "live" #Zotero citations. That is, the final document will look like a document that was written in Word with Zotero from the beginning, allowing you to edit the citations and generate a bibliography before submitting to a journal.

A few years ago I #degoogled my life by finding replacements for each and every one of the MANY google services and products I became reliant on over the years. I was spending around $30/m on their cloud products both for application development and personal use (Drive, Calendar, Mail etc.).
In just a few weeks I transitioned to a #selfHosted#nextcloud and haven't looked back. It handles my files, calendars, email, documents, backups, contacts and more - more than google even. A built in #WebDAV server allows you to sync your note apps like #joplin and #obsidian.
For #android users there's a wonderful app on #fdroid called #DAVx5 by @davx5@fosstodon.org, which allows you to auto sync your contacts & calendars. It works a treat. Really, this was just a long-winded way to give a shout-out to DavX5 for the great app! I only think about it when I change servers or phones, and that's a complement!

Okay, this is ridiculous. The NYT is recommending Cascade somehow as the best dishwasher detergent. The last two people who serviced our (now 15-year-old) beloved and very quiet Miele dishwasher said don't ever put that crap in your machine.
We used the exact same pods recommended by NYT and it made our dishwasher stink and it didn't get things clean.
My wife ended up making a homemade version that uses mostly natural stuff plus a pinch of something like Oxyclean. Best detergent ever used, and that's all we use now.
In case anyone is interested, here's the recipe:
DIY Dishwasher Detergent
YIELD: 4 1/2 CUPS / 2.2 LB (ENOUGH FOR 36 LOADS OF DISHES)
1 cup / 225 g super washing soda (sodium carbonate)
1 cup / 225 g powdered oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate)
1/4 cup / 62 g table salt (sodium chloride)
50 drops lemon essential oil
12 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil
Washing soda and oxygen bleach are skin sensitizing. I recommend wearing nitrile gloves while you prepare this DIY and washing your hands afterward.
Mix dry ingredients. Add washing soda, powdered oxygen bleach, and table salt into a large, non-metallic mixing bowl. Whisk to combine.
Add essential oils and stir until everything is thoroughly combined.
The essential oils will accumulate in small clusters at first. Keep
stirring to break them apart.
Transfer the detergent powder into an airtight glass jar or storing
container. Store sealed in a dry place, protected from moisture.
Use about 2 tablespoons per load.
Seems like it wouldn't be that hard to add to all their products while they're at it.

@jessica I think your question is really about backfeeding of "likes" and "comments" to your site via webmention. I'm not really sure why anyone would question an outgoing webmention. I've seen arguuments against backfeeds because someone commenting, for example on Mastodon, and having it land on a webpage they never interacted with is confusing and disconcerting for some.

Everything after before the "si=" is the actual link. That "si=" part lets Youtube link your fedi account to your Youtube account and therefore to everything Google has on you.
