Canuck Connection
Traffic begins flowing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, today, with the official opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Jointly owned by Canada and Michigan, it marks the culmination of more than 20 years of planning.
Roughly one-third of physical goods traded between the US and Canada flow across the Detroit River, most of which are transported over the privately owned Ambassador Bridge. The nearly 100-year-old structure dumps traffic onto Windsor roads and can cost commercial trucks more than $100 in tolls each way. The new bridge—named after the Hall of Fame Canadian hockey star—connects directly to Ontario’s Highway 401 and will cost about $43 for a five-axle semi. Canada, which footed the $6.4B bill, will split the toll surplus (revenue after operating costs) with the US for the first 15 years.

Berlin Suspect Killed
German police have fatally shot a 21-year-old suspect linked to Islamist circles after a nearly daylong search. The man, a German citizen identified as Abdul Ballout, was accused of carrying out a vehicle-ramming and stabbing attack at Berlin Pride that killed at least one person and wounded 29 others.
The attack took place shortly before 10 pm local time on Saturday, when a white van charged into crowds gathered at Tiergarten park, near an LGBTQ+ party. The suspect had been known to local police. He was extradited to Germany from Lebanon earlier this year and was released from detention in May with a one-year-10-month suspended sentence. It was not clear as of this writing what the sentence was for. Local officials are treating Saturday’s attack as an act of terrorism.

European Wildfires Spread
Wildfires across France and Spain have forced more than 330,000 people to evacuate as of this writing, including more than 250,000 in France alone—among the country’s largest-ever peacetime evacuation efforts. See photos.
The blazes are largely concentrated near France’s wine-making Bordeaux region and central Spain, near the capital of Madrid. In France, the wildfire near Bordeaux has consumed an area of land roughly four times the size of Paris. A new heat wave this week is expected to fuel the fires’ spread, with Spanish and French authorities warning of worse conditions to come. As of this writing, a new fire has opened near Spain’s coastal city of Valencia, forcing at least 15,000 people to evacuate.
Wildfires have become more frequent and more intense in recent years, with the World Health Organization noting the number of wildfires reported across Europe are up more than 50% since 2022.
