Plus: How to watch HR Derby, All-Star Game

Monday, July 13
SAN DIEGO -- The Padres love high school pitchers with high upside -- and they took another in the first round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday afternoon.
With the 21st overall selection, San Diego selected right-hander Coleman Borthwick out of South Walton High School in Florida.
“I’ve dreamed for this since I was a kid,” Borthwick said in a conference call with reporters. “I’m ready to play some baseball.”
Then, he added the kicker, which might one day make him a fan favorite in San Diego:
“I’m ready to go beat the Dodgers.”
Borthwick's profile is similar to so many recent Padres Draft picks under general manager A.J. Preller and scouting director Chris Kemp.
For one, the upside is obvious. Borthwick was dominant during his senior season in high school, posting a 0.21 ERA en route to winning the Gatorade High School Player of the Year Award in Florida. Borthwick went 11-0 and struck out 121 batters over 65 2/3 innings, while walking only seven -- ridiculous numbers.
“It’s just a track record of domination,” Kemp said. “The compete level is so high, which raised our conviction level. … When you’re that dominant and that consistent for as long as he has been, it really stands out.”

After taking Borthwick with their top selection, the Padres made four more picks in rounds two through four:
Round 2, pick 60: Elliot Lascelles, SS, Upper Canada College HS (ON)
Round 3, pick 97: Ryan Lynch, RHP, North Carolina
Round 4, pick 124: Robbie Lavey, C, George Washington (DC)
Round 4C, pick 134: Alex Conover, OF, Oklahoma State
Day 2 of the Draft saw the Padres take 16 players in rounds five through 20 — including Borthwick’s high school teammate, another very intriguing right-hander. For complete coverage of every Draft pick from Day 1, players to watch from Day 2 and more, click here >>,
Mason Miller is the Padres’ lone All-Star representative, the first time they’ve only had one rep since Kirby Yates in 2019. He’s more than deserving, of course. Miller is in the midst of one of the most dominant relief seasons of all-time. He made his All-Star debut two years ago with the A’s. And since then, he’s only gotten better.
It stands to reason that Miller would be the National League’s closer (though, perhaps with the game in Philadelphia, that duty would fall to Jhoan Duran). But if Miller were to record the save, he’d be the first Padres pitcher to earn the save at an All-Star Game since Goose Gossage in 1984.
While Miller is the Padres’ only player in Philadelphia, they’ll also be represented by ballgirl Genevieve Alves-Ortega, who was named an official crew member for the NL at the All-Star Game.
