Hey y’all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. Why bury the lede? Barnes & Noble named Don’t Call It Art one of the best books of 2026!

“If you’ve ever wondered how to get your childhood’s wild wacky and wonderfully weird imagination back, this is the book for you. With 10 practical steps, this is an inspiring, actionable guide to feeling like yourself again.”

The hardcover would make a beautiful gift for loved ones, friends, and colleagues. You can get as many copies as you like signed and personalized by me if you order from Bookpeople here in Austin, Texas.

    Buy the book

  2. Seems like every week I find a new quote I could’ve used in the book. Here’s artist William Kentridge: “I don’t think there’s a contradiction between the serious and the light, and how the one illuminates the other….. Tragedy isn’t a good way of dealing with social disaster. Comedy may be closer, but the category of the absurd, which can move between the two, is central.”

  3. Meghan was a big fan of Bad Blood, John Carreyrou’s book about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, so we went on a date last Friday to see Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary You Can See Everything. The film wrecked my nervous system the way I heard Uncut Gems wrecked other people’s. What I saw was a psychological horror movie about the kind of grifters and sociopaths ruining my world — and my city, too! (As I mentioned re: The Odyssey, I never regret going into a movie having read nothing about it and then just gorging on writing about it afterwards.)

  4. Great movies that came to mind while watching You Can See Everything: The Master (particularly Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack), Hitchcock’s Vertigo, and Orson Welles’ F for Fake. All three are on this great syllabus Corey Atad put together, which includes two other favorites, The Prestige and Phantom Thread. (I would add The Social Network and Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?” routine, and the folks on The Daily suggested How To With John Wilson and Sherman’s March.)

  5. I went right to the record store on release day and picked up a copy of Cameron Winter Live at Carnegie Hall. (Really looking forward to seeing Paul Thomas Anderson’s film in the theater.) A funny thing happened while listening in the studio: I mistakenly left “It All Fell in the River” playing in one browser window while Bob Dylan’s band was playing “Crash on the Levee” at the recent Oslo show in another browser window… and it kind of worked? I love happy accidents like that. (If you’re a Dylan fan, check out the “Tangled Up In Blue” from that same show.)

  6. Speaking of live music: My dad rock trio 2222 is playing at The Aristocrat Lounge tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon if you’re in Austin, Texas and you’d like to see me drink too many beers and butcher your favorite 90s songs onstage:

Any fans of The Old Dark House?

  7. Friend of the newsletter Julia Rothman has a new book out called Bird Anatomy: The Curious Lives of the World’s Feathered Creatures.

  8. Poem: “I have been younger in October / than in all the months of spring…” W.S. Merwin’s “The Love for October.”

  9. Halloween inspiration: The Oatmeal and his brother built a gigantic animatronic of Jimothy’s evil dad. (Also, there’s been a new Jimothy sighting!)

  10. We’ve had a wild run of cartoonist typewriter interviews this month: first Roz Chast, then Paul Noth, and this week maybe our wildest yet — Tuca & Bertie creator and Bojack Horseman designer Lisa Hanawalt!

Thanks for reading. In the words of Gary Panter, “Make art. Be happy. Listen to vinyl. Read paper books. Try to grow a plant. Wash behind your ears.”

xoxo,

P.S. I’m still working on my October mixtape! It’s going to be really hard to beat “The October Country” from two years ago and last year’s “No Fun,” but I’m gonna try…

Listen to the mix on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube
