Canada Tariffs Begin
Canada’s retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on roughly $20B of US imports took effect yesterday, targeting hundreds of products, including steel, dairy, appliances, clothing, agricultural equipment, and electronics.
The measures follow stalled trade negotiations and match US tariffs on Canadian goods imposed last month; Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pushed to reduce Canada’s reliance on its largest trading partner (how did we get here?). Canada is the top customer for exports from 27 US states—see the top global trade partner for your state—and the affected goods account for roughly 6% of the $334B the US exported to Canada last year. Separately, Canada, France, and the UK announced a ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, saying expansion threatens a two-state solution. 9/11 Air Quality
New York City officials yesterday released more than 170,000 pages of previously unseen documents detailing poor air quality and health risks after the 9/11 attacks.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) ordered the files' release as part of a $34M initiative (explore here). The trove includes a 2001 memo showing officials feared lawsuits arising from people claiming toxic exposure. Taken together, the records suggest New Yorkers were advised to return to the area before it was safe, with officials finding evidence of asbestos as far as half a mile from Ground Zero at least 10 months after the attack. Asbestos exposure can cause lung tissue scarring and cancers, including mesothelioma and lung cancer. Researchers also found that roughly 25% of kids exposed to 9/11 dust developed asthma, compared with 16% of their peers.
The toxins largely came from pulverized building materials and smoldering fires fueled by jet fuel. See a photo of the smoke and dust captured from space here.

French Museum Heist
Two thieves made off with a pair of Renoir paintings yesterday from a museum in southern France. See photos of the missing pieces, each worth $10.4M.
The alarm system for Cagnes-sur-Mer’s Renoir Museum went off at around 5:48 am local time, with police reportedly arriving on the scene within five minutes. By that time, robbers had broken a hole in the garden fence and cut through bolts holding several paintings’ frames, making off with some of the loot. The paintings they stole were the 1886 “Young Woman at the Well” and a 1910 portrait of French actress Colonna Romano. Two other portraits were found abandoned in the garden. The incident marks the latest in a series of European museum heists; a small Spanish museum was robbed late last month (see previous write-up).
The Renoir Museum was impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s last home before he died in 1919. It houses more than a dozen Renoir pieces and other belongings, including his wheelchair and personal letters. See virtual gallery.
