5-Bullet Friday

The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. I tossed in an extra bullet for added spice.

Podcast Episode I’m Listening to

“The Poison Squad” on the Criminal podcast. This is a wild listen. Think we could do without the FDA? Think “all natural” supplements are automatically better or safer than prescription drugs? Listen to the stories in this episode, and you’ll reconsider.

From the description: “In 1902, twelve young men volunteered for a government experiment. They agreed to eat food laced with chemicals like formaldehyde, borax, and salicylic acid every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They were called The Poison Squad.” The reasons behind this experiment are the craziest part of all. Hat tip to Brendan Gahan for the recommendation.

Kitchen Gear that I’m Loving and using

Ninja Air Fryer Pro. This thing is amazing. I was skeptical (“Does ‘air frying’ even make sense?”), but now I’m a true believer. For fast cooking and even faster cleanup, it’s become a go-to in the kitchen. My favorite thing I’ve cooked so far is Maui Nui Reserve aged rib chops. It’s literally what’s for dinner tonight. Here’s the recipe, if you can call it that: Get the chops to room temp, pat dry, rub on a little olive oil, add Montreal steak rub, then cook for 9 minutes at max temp (400°F). F’ing DELICIOUS, and cleaning is a breeze.

Tools I’m Using to Vet doctors

Open Payments (official US gov website) shows reported payments from drug and device companies to U.S. doctors. Doctor Payments Data makes those records easier to explore, so you might want to start there. Financial ties don’t automatically mean wrongdoing, but they’re worth understanding. Incentives affect all of us, and that includes medical professionals. As Charlie Munger famously said, “Show me the incentive, and I’ll show you the outcome.” I recently used these tools to choose between two surgeons. The doc who wanted to do the minimum effective dose of surgery had $0 in payments, and the doc who wanted to do more extensive procedures and implants had ~$1M in payments, including from the manufacturer of the implants. Again, this doesn’t mean bad behavior, but I was more comfortable with the completely free agent.

If a great medical professional—one who is known as a thought leader—has few or no conflicts, it’s probably not accidental. Turning down cushy consulting gigs, paid speaking, and related perks to preserve your objectivity isn’t easy. I’ve thought about possibly creating something like a MacArthur Grant to reward those people. What do you think? Let me know @tferriss on X, and add #grant at the end so I can find it.

Rare “Hall of Shame” nomination

After waiting more than a year for lab results for a family member, including multiple follow-ups with the company, I have taken to publicly calling out DNAComplete to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Sadly, I am not alone!

Game That Made Me laugh

Cubicle Escape Artist. A casual video game based on The 4-Hour Workweek? Named after my first blog? Never thought I’d see such a thing. “Decline meetings, tango past interruptions, automate a shortcut, reclaim your Friday.” You can play it in 60 seconds. You can also deploy and publish your own games on Spacefast, an agent-native hosting and publishing platform. Thanks to @dlprager for the find.

Quote I’m pondering

“Believe those who are seeking the truth, doubt those who find it.”

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my brand-new interview with legendary chef Jacques Pépin.

And, as always, please give me feedback on X. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim
