5-Bullet Friday

The latest from author and investor Tim Ferriss

Hi All!

Here is your weekly dose of 5-Bullet Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. I threw in an extra bullet for spice.

This edition is brought to you by The Way, the meditation app I use most often. Be sure to see their offer in the P.S.

What I’m listening to

Softer — Ya Habibi Ta’ala - يا حبيبي تعالَ - Lynn Adib & Zeid Hamdan. Lynn’s vocals are otherworldly. One of the top comments says it all: “liquid gold.” This is a short clip, and you will play it more than once.

Harder — Ice Nine Kills - Hip To Be Scared ft. Jacoby Shaddix. Ice Nine Kills is also the creative force behind the Silver Scream convention in Worcester, Massachusetts. If you missed it this year, you can learn more about future conventions here. It’s no accident that Worcester is close to Salem, where many attendees go first to get into the proper mood.

Fungal — Mushroom in the Wild Playing Synth. This is wild in every sense of the word. Bioelectrical fluctuations in the mushroom control robotic arms that create music on drum pads. The experiment was funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

What I’m reading and watching

“What 100 Hours of Dark Retreat Did to My Mind.” Nate is Head of Content for Sam Harris’s Waking Up meditation app and a longtime meditator himself. OGs will remember Nate from his über-popular guest post “How To Lose 20–30 Pounds In 5 Days: The Extreme Weight Cutting and Rehydration Secrets of UFC Fighters” and his contribution to The 4-Hour Body chapter “The Meatless Machine II: A 28-Day Experiment.” Hat tip to Jake Orthwein, who flagged Nate’s video for me. Pair his piece with my interview with Dr. Willoughby Britton on the hidden risks of meditation.

Documentary I’m watching

Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald. For people who don’t have Netflix, at least check out this compilation of some of Norm’s appearances on late-night shows. To state the obvious, Norm is NSFW.

AI buffet I’m exploring

“Adobe, Office, Outlook, ElevenLabs: AI is cloning all of it in Rust.” Check this link. The speed is staggering, and it will all accelerate. AI will make nearly all software free. What is the moat that then remains? Reputation and service-level agreements? Support and services à la Red Hat? The knowledge base of someone like an SAP, with 400,000 companies and 50+ years of data? Something else?

Idealab. Bill Gross has started 175+ companies through Idealab. He wrote down 31 of the methods he uses to turn real-world problems into businesses, refined them with AI, and found the output beat his own brainstorming. He can’t build them all, so he’s giving them away: 1.2 million+ business ideas, free.

Podcast changes I’m exploring

Friends — I’d like to do more unscripted podcast episodes, like The Random Show and live Q&As. Any ideas for what could be fun? What you’d like to see or listen to? Weird ideas welcome. Just reply to this tweet, and I’ll read them all. Thanks! 🙏

Quote I’m pondering

“Successful people sort through priorities and act upon them, while the unsuccessful see only a fog of chaos.”

— Josef Venport, instruction to business trainees, in Mentats of Dune by Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson (2014)

You can complement this edition of 5-Bullet Friday with my recent subscriber Q&A. We explore what The 4-Hour Workweek looks like in the age of AI, rebuilding momentum when you’re stuck, navigating friendships, making room for serendipity, The 4-Hour Body after 40, and much, much more.

And, as always, please give me feedback on X. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Please let me know. Just send a tweet to @tferriss and put #5BulletFriday at the end so I can find it.

Have a wonderful weekend, all.

Much love to you and yours,

Tim

P.S. Deal of the Week — The Way meditation training program. 10 minutes a day might just change your life...

I’ve explored a lot of meditation practices over the years. My current hands-down favorite, and the easiest way to get back in the habit, is The Way, taught by Zen Master Henry Shukman. Using the app for just 10–20 minutes a day has reduced my anxiety more than I would have thought possible with any app. Try it for a week, and I think you’ll notice something similar. Here are 30 days for free.

The Way leads you down a single, long-term path that covers all the key areas of a deep and fulfilling meditation practice. It’s an easy and calming way to find more ease and calm. There’s no overwhelming menu of stuff or meditation du jour, just Henry taking you on a logical progression of lessons, one manageable bite at a time. You’ll be learning skills you can actually take into your daily life. Henry’s sessions will become something you look forward to. He’s appeared on my podcast twice and is always a listener favorite. I recently chose to invest in The Way, given all the above, and I’ve been working with Henry and his team to make the app as good as humanly possible. I’ve probably sent a hundred notes on the product, and they’ve been improving it each and every week.

Now, subscribers to 5-Bullet Friday can try 30 days for free, no credit card required. Just go to TheWayApp.com/Tim. Try it for a week, and I think you’ll be more than pleasantly surprised.
