Installing Windows 7 in 2017

  • Download the latest graphics, network, graphics and any other necessary drivers for your system or motherboard and put them on a USB stick
    • Download KB3172605 and KB3020369
    • Put them on the same USB stick you made above
  • Nothing attached except keyboard, mouse and monitor (do NOT attach network cable)
  • Install Windows from your disc or thumb drive. If you are using upgrade media, choose custom
  • Enter product key when prompted
  • Set Windows Update to never check for updates
    • Start → all programs → Windows Update
  • Install the networking, graphics and audio files from the USB stick you made above. Do not restart if prompted
  • Shutdown the computer
  • Plug in the network cable
  • Turn on the computer and wait for it to boot to the desktop
  • Choose the appropriate network type
  • Install KB3172605 that you downloaded above. If it doesn't gives you an error, install KB3020369 first
    • Note: I had to install KB3020369 first
    • After KB3172605 is installed, reboot as prompted
    • Wait 10 minutes
  • Go into windows update and check for updates
    • Install all important updates
      • This can take hours depending on the number of updates and the speed of your computer
    • Reboot for the computer to install all the updates
      • This can take a while too and your computer will reboot itself a couple times
  • Check for updates
    • Install important updates
      • System will reboot
  • Check for updates
    • Install important updates
  • Click 'Find out more' next to 'Get updates for other Microsoft products'
    • Agree to the terms and install the updater
  • Check for updates again
    • Install any Important updates and look through the optional updates and be sure to install MS Security Essentials, Silverlight, and any updates and rollups
    • Follow the prompts to install Security Essentials
      • No need to scan at this time
      • Cancel the definitions update install so the rest of the updates install (Close IE if it opens)
      • Watch for the update for Security Essentials to appear in the task bar and click on it perform the update. Otherwise the updates screen will appear stalled.
    • Reboot when prompted
  • Check for updates
    • Install any important updates
    • Reboot if prompted
  • Windows will now be set to automatically install updates. Change this if you want to now.
  • Update the definitions in MS Security Essentials
  • Adjust audio quality from HDMI
    • Control Panel –> Sound
      • Be sure the right device is set as default
      • Click on your device in the list and select properties. On the advanced tab and set the output to DVD or Studio quality then click ok
      • Click on your device and run through the tests and set your number of speakers
  • Download and install Chrome and 7-Zip https://ninite.com/7zip-chrome/
  • Download and install:
  • Plug in any other hardware and install it
  • Windows Media Center
    • Download and install HDHomerun drivers: https://www.silicondust.com/support/downloads/
    • Run through the basic Media Center installation steps
    • Go into the Extras Gallery in Media Center and install and run the cable card advisor
    • Go to Setup Live TV
