I’m currently sitting on Amtrak’s Southwest Chief on day 2 of a cross-country train trip. The Great American Train Experience 2016. Or as I like to call it in the age of the hashtag: #GATE16. It’s a lofty title for my trip but I like how it fits in the acronym GATE.

I left San Diego yesterday afternoon around 2:45pm and we arrived here just before 11am. My trip will take me on through New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and finally arriving in Chicago, IL tomorrow (Tuesday) at around 3:15pm. I’ll be in Chicago for a couple nights then I leave by train heading West on the Empire Builder. That will take me through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and finally arriving in Portland, OR on Saturday. Sunday I fly home from Portland.

Why? Well, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. Plus, the states I go through on the Empire Builder are the few left to visit on the list of 50. I’ve done a couple cross-country bus trips that took me all over and flew all over at a former job but I’ve been itching to go by train.

So, look for pictures I post along the way and if you are along the route, wave at any Amtraks you see.

All aboard!
